스티브 잡스의 유언에 감동했다면, 이제 팩트 체크를 해보자

최근 화제가 되고 있는 글이 있습니다. ‘스티브 잡스가 마지막에 남긴 말(Steve Jobs’ Last Word)’이라는 글입니다. 감동 받으신 분들도 계실 것이고, 의아하게 여긴 사람도 있을 겁니다. 그러니까, 제가 아는 잡스는, 마지막에 이런 말을 할 사람이 아니거든요.

그 내용은 다음과 같습니다.

I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world. In others’ eyes, my life is an epitome of success. However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to.

At this moment, lying on the sick bed and recalling my whole life, I realize that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in, have paled and become meaningless in the face of impending death. In the darkness, I look at the green lights from the life supporting machines and hear the humming mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of god of death drawing closer…

Now I know, when we have accumulated sufficient wealth to last our lifetime, we should pursue other matters that are unrelated to wealth…

Should be something that is more important: Perhaps relationships, perhaps art, perhaps a dream from younger days Non-stop pursuing of wealth will only turn a person into a twisted being, just like me. God gave us the senses to let us feel the love in everyone’s heart, not the illusions brought about by wealth. The wealth I have won in my life I cannot bring with me. What I can bring is only the memories precipitated by love.

That’s the true riches which will follow you, accompany you, giving you strength and light to go on. Love can travel a thousand miles. Life has no limit. Go where you want to go. Reach the height you want to reach. It is all in your heart and in your hands.

You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to bear the sickness for you. Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost – Life. When a person goes into the operating room, he will realize that there is one book that he has yet to finish reading – Book of Healthy Life. Whichever stage in life we are at right now, with time, we will face the day when the curtain comes down.

간단히 말해 부와 명예를 좇지말고 더 많은 경험을 하라는 말. 당신의 삶을 소중하게 대하라는 말. 멋진 말이죠. 그런데 스티브 잡스가 recognition 과 wealth 에 자부심을 가졌다고요?

… 내가 아는 잡스는 이렇지 않아…-_-;;

게다가 전체적인 분위기가, 이건 ‘영혼을 위한 닭고기 수프’에나 어울리는 글이지 잡스-가 자기 입으로 했다고는/썼다고는 도저히 믿기지가 않아서, 찾아봤습니다. 음… 뭐 금방 출처가 찾아지네요.

이 글은, 타이완에서 출판된 ‘Say It Before Its Too Late: The Last Words of New Yorkers(不說，就真來不及了︰紐約客的臨終遺言)’책에 실린 글입니다. 그 책에는 포춘 500대 기업 CEO의 소원(世界500强CEO的离奇心愿)이란 제목으로 실려있었고, 이 글이 스티브 잡스의 마지막 글…이라고 2013년경 중국 인터넷에 돌아다니는 바람에, 한번 거짓말이라고 판명이 된 글입니다. 물론 이 글 자체도 작가가 만들어낸 창작물이고요.

그러다 올해 11월, 이 글이 영문으로 번역되어 돌아다니면서… 미국과 한국에서도 다시 화제가 된 거죠… 덕분에 인터넷 괴담 잡아내는 사이트에서도, 이 글의 문장이 뭔가 (문법적으로) 이상하다-라고 지적하고 있는 것이구요.

결론 : 잡스는 이런 말을 하지 않았습니다. 지금 돌아다니는 글은 대만에서 발행된 ‘감동 이야기’류의 서적에 실린 글에, 잡스의 이름이 붙은 것 뿐입니다. 물론 그래도 삶이 중요하다는 것은, 자신을 소중하게 대해야 한다는 것은, 부와 명예보다 삶의 기쁨을 좇아야 한다는 것은 바뀌지 않겠지만 말입니다.

주변에 ‘나의 스티브 잡스가 그렇게 약한 소리를 할 리가 없어!’라고 생각하는 사람이 있다면, 이 외국말 해석 하느라 고생한 포스팅을 공유해주시…지 않아도 됩니다. 애시당초 제가 그런 걸 바랄리가 없잖아요.
